What kind of shit is that?!

Ok I'm not a big alcohol partisan, and like any other country, Canada has its blows.
Last night I went to the Absynthe pub with Hiroshi and I ordered a pint... turns out I meant a "jar" of beer... not a glass... so basically I got lost in translation, here they call a jar a pitcher. Fine, that's just my fault for being foreign.
Then, we got ourselves some nice ass nachos and a chili dog. Yum yum, but after a while we figured the pitcher was tooooo much for us to finish! Same went with the nachos! And I'm a big eater usually, but I had already eaten and drunk at a party before that. So what gives? Well it's ok, I just thought we could always make it a doggy bag and bring it outside.

I go up to the barman, ask him to put all this happy stuff to take away. He comes back with a box within it the nachos. I also ask him "Could you also please put the beer in something like a bottle... or a big cup with a lid maybe..." and he tells me "that is absolutely impossible". I look at him at first thinking "oh maybe he doesnt' have empty bottles or cups to put this in hm" so I ask him "Oh well why so?"
"You don't know? You're basically not allowed to walk around with open alcohol outside"
"huh?"
"Yeah if you ever get caught with alcohol outside you won't be able to come back here ever again"
"You're kidding me!"
"No I'm serious, it's illegal here!"
"It's illegal to drink alcohol outside?!"
"Yea it's pretty brutal! After that we will have lots of problems with the board!"
"What the hell..."

It's stunning the bullshit the WCTU managed to stir up till today in the early 20th century. Now because of them Canadians gotta get their booze from specific shops (LCBO being apparently the only one), are not allowed to drink it outside, and check ID everytime. Sheesh... this is the 21st century! This isn't battle for ethics anymore! Why does it have to be so uptight?
Anyway as I said I don't mind not having to drink alcohol, but still, it sucks not to be free of alcohol around!
I mean sure, getting drunk is pointless and basically once you puke it all you call it "an awesome night", but that's not the reason to be so uptight about it. It's by limiting it that you create frustration and people always crave for more of it, kinda like with me and sex!

So yeah, Canada a freer country? Sure, just really uptight on alcohol. Thank you very much, Catholic Mothers, you fuckers!

By the way, I went for the first time in an LCBO today. Turns out it stands for Liquor Control Board of Ontario. Damn. I thought it was just a fancy name for a shop, but it turns out it's directly linked with authorities and the government! Jeez.
But because of all this craze around beer, when I stepped into the LCBO I thought it'd be packed with frat boys and bros, all raging on the Coors and the Mooseheads, like a heard of vultures, all yelling "BEER BEER BEER BEER BEER BEER!!!"
But no, it was basically empty. Interesting. I got myself a nice bottle of Martini. Their choice of French wine is pathetic. It basically has big names like Chateauneuf du Pape, Beaujolais and some other stuff, but it matches in no way with the Nicolas liquor stores in France. It's also funny when I tell Canadians that in France and Turkey you can buy your alcohol anywhere, randomly just in supermarkets without any problem and they look at me like it's the most amazing thing on earth! "Seriously?? Holy Shit!! No way!!"

Hey... I just got an idea for a skit...

Kensington Market

Toronto's hippie district has pedestrian Sundays regularly and about two weeks ago we went there with ISAY (International Students' Association at York), and believe me it was fun. It was rather funky, since the first thing we saw was this:

A hippied up car! Poor thing! It was full with soil and growing plants! Damn hippies! But this wasn't the only car, there was also this next one:

Basically it was full of white paint and hippie messages all over it! Damn. Oh well it amused me, I didn't really mind. I just don't like hippies. Anyway I walked around and saw many jamaican shops, cheap shoe and clothes shops, and when I mean cheap I mean bad quality. But they were ok. They looked good. Then I went by another small street, in which I saw something awesome that made me like this place even more:

"Roach'o'Rama: Serving Potheads since ah... I forget". Wow. So we have a comical subtitle for a coffee shop. And I thought I had only seen that in Family Guy or The Simpsons. Wow. Just awesome. I love this country.
This is I think the only coffee shop in the country, but you gotta bring your own pot to smoke inside. Screw Holland!
On that same street there were a lot of jamaican shops, and as I walked along it I heard some rockabilly. It sounded like The Reverend Horton Heat. I followed the noise and the music came from a live band in a pub. Awesome! No need for Fete de la Musique to have live bands in the streets, bitches! I told you Canada was a free country! After they played, during their break, I went to see them to buy their CDs. They loved me for a bit, and I can tell you their music is good. Some good rockabilly!
On that same street some dude was promoting his artwork. You can see it here. Then I walked more around the place and I heard another band covering Hit Me Baby One More Time. Not bad, sounded like Travis's cover.
I also noticed this:

Very nice! I like!

As I walked around there were little shops in little townhouses, sold all types of funky apparels, I saw tonnes of hawaiian shirts, but I was looking more for a lumberjack shirt. Didn't find any. The clothes were nice, second hand retro stuff. I was just too fat to fit in them!
There were bands everywhere though, this next one is really funny, the drummer is basically drumming with two hand brooms on a big hollow cardboard box, using the right food as the beat, and the left foot on bells to make the counter beat. It's the most ghetto drum set I've ever seen!

So their style is country, it was really good, the next song after was faster hillbilly country music and unfortunately I missed it! God damn. I'm really not good at taking vids!
I also saw this very nice pickup:

After that I went back to the main street, and had freshly grilled tuna fish, with the skin and bones and everything, just like in east Asia or Turkey. With that fish balls (delicious!) and a can of coke.... but the can was particular. It wasn't a recent can, it look too classic! Basically the can was fully red, no design or patterns on it, no calorie chart, it looked like those old 90s coke cans! But of course it was of date. Weird. I haven't had Canadian coke in a can since... well I never had a Canadian coke in a can because York is sponsored by Pepsi! But it was nice eating a whole fish, it was well grilled, and fish is best grilled! Then walking back up to get back with the group, after a couple of more bands, I saw this

I really liked this day, and I'm willing to go back to Kensington Market. It's a really nice place, lots of things to do!
Fuck Paris, Toronto's the place to be!

I wonder if they have night markets too there, that would be nice!

Teoman's Band of the Month - Ill Niño

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I always loved this band and I think here's the appropriate time to talk about them. Their best album in my opinion is Confession, with such great songs such as How Can I Live (one of my favorite songs ever, which also appeared on the Freddy vs Jason OST). I suggest you check them out, you're in for some really good and unique Nu Metal.

Ill Niño are:
-Cristian Machado (Vocals)
-Diego Verduzco (Guitar)
-Ahrue Luster (Guitar)
-Lazaro Pina (Bass)
-Dave Chavarri (Drums)
-Daniel Couto (Percussions)

Although some members are Brazilian, and others Hispanic, Ill Niño's origins greatly influence their music, making it full of traditional beats, and instruments who accompany the distorted traditional heavy metal sound. Sometimes a little bit of Spanish lyrics are inserted in the songs behind a nice classic guitar solo accompanied by traditional percussions. This is Ill Niño, the tradition of latin american music with today's heavy metal and screaming. And awesome combination which works like dynamite, and is really great to hear.
Obviously their name comes from El Niño, the weather phenomenon, but they had to change it once on RoadRunner Records since another band used this name already.
There's not much else to say about them, so just listen.
