So I think 2008 is a very productive year for music for me. At least in terms of the bands I newly discovered who are all awesome. As well as new albums from old bands I listen to who have come out and have been really great to my ears!
So here's a little list of shit I just was glad to discover:
-First off I cannot-not start with DevilDriver. Sure it's old and I heard of it before, but dammit!!! I can't believe how a band like this has caught my attention and interest in such a short period of time (basically after listening to two songs I loved them right away). I downloaded all their 3 albums in one go and listened to them straight: absolutely great. It brings a breath of fresh air to the 2000's metal scene, not because it's new or anything, but because it sounds old and I think that's what's great. Seriously! I think it sounds like good old Pantera with more melodies and cool shit, but less cool solos! Anyway I love this type of metal, groove or thrash metal!
-Then comes The Agony Scene. Not bad, rather worth it though; sounds like Trivium!
-The Black Dahlia Murder: Been listening to it for a while now, and yeah it's awesome! Great melodies, great riffs, nice melodic solos, and cool lyrics too! They also have fun music videos!
-Mors Principium Est I have just started listening but it's really good. Although the name would remind you of some dark Black Metal/Goth Metal band, it's actually Melodic Death Metal like early In Flames. Everything is there: synths, heavy riffs, sometimes choirs, and cool melodies. Good stuff, I think this is the next band coming up on my "To Buy" list!
-Haste the Day: Christian Metalcore band. Good shit, I'm not a huge fan of Christian bands but you know I also noticed I never heard that stuff before. I listened to their album "Pressure the Hinges" and I thought it sounds pretty good and the singing was nice too! I'll have to listen to it more, but so far it's recommendable!
-36 Crazyfists have released their new album "The Tide and its Sinkers" and GODDAMN!!!! Must I say how cool it is?! All throughout a really cool album, more aggressive than their past work but still does the trick for this great band! I can't believe I've been listening to them since the age of 15 and I still haven't seen them live!
-All time awesome band In Flames have released a while ago their new album "A Sense of Purpose" and despite all the hype I put in it it was rather a disappointing album and lacked aggressiveness and the usual good punch. This time the band concentrated on a more melodic approach although the melodies are not as captivating and clever as they were in Colony. Despite this melodic approach the album ironically contains more growls and screaming than Come Clarity! YET I must admit that their "The Mirror's Truth" EP was rather good though! I would have been anticipating this album even after the EP but it was disappointing. Too bad, there are other bands to catch up with!
-And finally, after 2 mediocre albums after the absolutely great "Wages of Sin" in 2001, Arch Enemy is back (since last year though) with "Rise of the Tyrant" where there really is NO wrong step in the whole album! It is close to the perfect album, though I know this is very subjective. But BOY! I finally got to listen to this great album and wasn't expecting it to be so awesome although I really like Arch Enemy! Riffs, speed, solos, melodies, everything is in that god damn album and it's really awesome to hear talent once again. This is possibly their BEST album- so far! But I doubt they'll ever be able to surpass the talent of this album!
